Is your company ready in the event of an emergency?
Emergencies can occur at any time and often without prior warning.
Pre-planning is imperative to prevent further disasters in the event of some of the following emergency situations:
- Medical Emergency – a sick or injured person
- Power outages
- Adverse weather conditions e.g. flooding, high winds, storm damage, unsafe workplaces
- Gas leak
- Chemical leak
People can react differently in these situations and the normal chain of command may break down. Stressful situations can lead to errors in judgement, confusion and panic. It is vital therefore that everyone in your organisation is familiar with the Emergency Plan of action.
Roles and responsibilities should be clearly outlined and there should be a responsible emergency contact in the event of an emergency. Site plans should illustrate the location of fire safety equipment, emergency assembly points and clear sign posts should easily direct emergency services to specific areas.
Consideration should be given to training staff in certain areas so that they are aware of what to do in an emergency:
- First Aid Training
- Fire Safety Training
- Chemical awareness training
